A few months ago, I ran across this stunning floral jumpsuit on Pinterest. I was obsessed with it! There wasn’t much information on Pinterest, so I Googled and Googled until I finally found it. It was a Dolce and Gabbana Rose silk chiffon jumpsuit from their 2018 Spring/Summer collection. Of course! Not only was it wildly out of my price range, but even if I did have a few thousand dollars to drop on a jumpsuit, it was no longer available for sale. So, I decided to recreate it myself. Only this time, I customized it to my heart’s content. I skipped the tie neckline, the shirred waist, and the matching cape (although I may make the cape later because I love this jumpsuit so much). Using a rose print Morrocaine Crepe fabric provided by Minerva Crafts and the Avenir jumpsuit pattern from Friday Pattern Company, here’s my designer-inspired jumpsuit.
This crepe from Minerva was absolutely perfect for this project! I wanted something that flowed like silk chiffon, but with a bit more structure and opacity. And I wanted something that I could easily launder at home. The Morrocaine Crepe ticked all the boxes for me! The rose print is a great size for projects needing a bold pattern and the fabric flows beautifully. Also, it’s machine washable and opaque enough for me to not worry about any wardrobe malfunctions!
As I wanted this jumpsuit to be quite long and billowy around my waist, arms and legs, I made a few simple alterations:
Graded the front and back torso pieces from 1x (neckline) to 3x (waist)
Lengthened the torso pieces by 5.5 inches
Lengthened leg pieces by 2 inches
Lengthened the sleeves by 4 inches
Used 1 inch elastic instead of 1/2 inch elastic for the waist
Shortened the sleeve hem elastic to 8.5 inches
Used 10.5 inch long elastic to gather the leg hems
Topstitched the neckline
This fabric was wonderful to work with and sewed beautifully. Unlike other similar fabrics, I had no issues with snagging or wrinkling. The pattern’s instructions were clear and easy to follow, so sewing was a breeze. The whole project was completed in one evening, but I think it looks far more time intensive. This jumpsuit looks so professional and couture, but it’s as comfortable as pajamas to wear. I took pictures of this jumpsuit in heels, but I think we all know that I’m probably going to wear them with glittery sneakers. I can’t wait until it’s cool enough for me to wear it out!
