Summer is in full swing and I’m on the hunt for versatile, breezy clothes. This usually means a dress, but there are so many kinds of dresses out there – it can be hard to choose one. I need pockets, of course, and I’d rather it be sleeveless at the moment. I love a pinafore style, but all of mine are made of woven fabrics and it’s too hot for me to break out the iron. Also, I can’t really stand to feel fabric stick against my skin during these hot, humid summer days. Luckily, Minerva just released a new cocoon dress pattern for knit fabrics – the Jane Dress. I was lucky enough to review the sewing kit, which has everything you need to sew this dress!
Jane is a beginner-level pattern made for light to medium knit fabrics. I sewed this dress up in a busy afternoon and would highly recommend this pattern. The silhouette is simple so its perfect for showing off complicated, printed fabrics. The sleeveless design and oversized, cocoon shape helps with airflow, and it’s just fun to wear. This knee-length dress also has deep side pockets, which I reinforced with fusible interfacing. That’s why I love the Minerva sewing kits. I never would have thought about interfacing the pockets if it weren’t for the kit. FYI, the kit is available for purchase now!
There are several fabrics available with the Minerva Jane Dress kit, but I chose the Floret Flow Viscose Jersey Stretch Knit fabric. This super soft fabric has an 80% stretch across the width, so it’s a perfect match for this pattern. The fabric is medium-weight and completely opaque. The last thing I want to deal with is lining a fabric during this steamy season. The color is bright and peppy, and remained vibrant even after laundering. This fabric sewed wonderfully, and I had no snagging or fraying.
Minerva sewing kits are great when you want to quickly get started on a project, without worrying if you have enough fabric or the right color thread.
