What type of sewist are you?
1. A sprinter – Short bursts of sewing at a time – two hours or less
2. A combo sewist – I prefer to sew a few hours at a time
3. A marathoner – I need at least six hours of uninterrupted sewing time
4. A fun runner – I sew with little regard to how much time I have
Typically, I sew in large chunks over the weekend. I have such limited time during the week that sewing tends to take a back seat. This week, I decided to sew in short bursts to see how that works.
Last night, I started my project by prepping my materials, prepping my sewing machine and serger, cutting the fabric, and applying the interfacing. I almost began staystitching the neckline, but i knew if I got the machine going, I would do too much. I’ve never sewn this pattern before and don’t want to rush through it.
So, remember my plan to sew a little every day? Yeah, that lasted a total of three days. I absolutely hated it. By the time I really got going, it felt like I had to stop to go to bed or risk losing sleep to work on my sewing. This is the exact opposite of what I wanted. In the end, I spent my Saturday working on a slightly hacked Seamwork Sage top.
Just looking at Sage, I knew this top would be too short for me. I cannot stand shirts that stop at your navel. I’m not a child – give me a full shirt! Anyhoo, this was a simple fix. I simply lengthened the bodice and placket pieces by five inches. The neckline is lower than I’d like, so I’d definitely raise that a couple inches in the future. Other than those two tweaks, I really like this pattern. It’s flattering and office-appropriate, which is a great addition to my wardrobe. I have a project in mind that I think will work for Sage, but we shall see.
For my Sage, I used the Atelier Brunette Ekko Ecovero Viscose Challis in Deep Charcoal from Minerva. This medium weight fabric is opaque and smooth to the touch. It sewed up really well and I didn’t experience any snags or runs, despite having to use my seam ripper a few times. The design is really cool and the fabric laundered like a dream. Also, since the colors are so neutral, this top can go with just about anything!
